Bama loses last minute lead to fall to State 56-52

`Typical State and Bama slugfest...

Bama did everything that a road team can do to win. That got out a first half hole. They rallied to take a four point lead. Then Superman, in the form of Dee Bost, who is a great player did what great players do - he knifed the Tide in their Crimson Hearts with three triple late to pull a victory out of a loss.

The Bulldogs had taken a three point lead when Andrew Steele was filed. Since the Bulldogs had only five fouls the Tide was forced to throw the ball inbounds. Everyone expect a three point attempt. Instead, Trevor Lacey hit a layup to cut the Bulldog lead to 53-52. Head Man Anthony Grant has set up the layup play. "They had fouls to give. I wanted to make sure we got a good shot instead of throwing up a bad three" It worked.  With 7.6 seconds left Rick Stansbury wanted a lot pass into Moultrie. Instead, Dee Bost told Bryant to go long. Bost threw him a picture perfect pass which he converted to a three point play. The Bulldogs escaped by the length of a Dawg tail.

I was very impressed with our coaching in the second half. Moultrie had 15 at the half, and got 10 more in the first 6 minutes of the second half. After that the Tide managed to double team and deny the the entry pass. This would only work because the contesting guard was quick enough to leave and cover his man when State couldn't get it down low.

State's superior height proved too much for the Tide. Green and Mitchell got swallowed up in the tall timber. More than those two Tide players Releford generally the knife against a zone with his imaginative penetration just couldn't shoot over the Sidney and Moutrie. Bama also only made 1-9 from the outside. I kept hoping that Bama would give Steele a few more looks.

I know a lot of talk is going to start about how soft Green plays. How Mitchell's shot selection wasn't great. that would be unfair to each player. You cannot imagine how tall Moultrie is until you see him in person. He has long arms. He's a force. If we had him we could win a National Championship. Sidney is just so big you can't play around him. The Tide's defense almost pulled off a huge upset. The Tide had the lead and allowed Bost to shoot three shots from the outside. Even then the Tide was one defensive stop away from winning.  Credit to Stansbury who settled a rattled team down at the end.

State is a darn good team. The addition of Moultrie makes them conference contenders and perhaps beyound. But not the 1000 mile drive back down Highway 82 I came to realize that we are just as good.  If we get some minutes out of Guye in the conference it will help against good teams. Grant found a way to shut down Moultrie and Sydney in the last 15 minutes. We are good getting better.

Tide fans need to show up on Wednesday night to help the team against Vandy. We all have our parts. Our part is to yell and scream, and help give the team some energy. I hate Vanderbilt. One season when we were beating them in Nashville they started this chant. I won't forget it. "That's all right, that's okay, you will work for us someday."
